Trees more than 80 feet tall and larger than 24 inches diameter are occasionally found. Their bark is smooth, greenish-white, yellowish-white, yellowish-gray, or gray to almost white in color. The tree has an extensive root system that can grow up to 40 feet away from the parent tree. The Aspen&#8217;s roots seek out water sources and in the process can tear up sidewalks and infiltrate sewers and septic systems. We see them all the time popping up in our grass and flower beds. In order to temporarily\u00a0stop there rapid root\u00a0try trenching around what ever side of the tree you do not want the shoots going.
