CentralOregon winters can be harsh with heavy precipitation. Providing your yard with proper drainage where there is excessive moisture is vital to a healthy landscape.  Believe it or not but almost half of all homeowners have drainage issues left without resolve. There are several great solutions to solving this problem, one is a french drain. A french drain is used to redirect the water away from the pooling area. The first step in installing a french drain is  to dig a trench at least 6 inches wide and 8 to 12 inches deep. The second step is to ensure proper slope by observing water flow. Once you have a proper slope you can either lay a drainage pipe or fill with gravel (1″approx. in size). Lastly top with three to four inches with sand to provide a medium in which turf can grow so that the trench will not be visible.
